Story: Hooker consults Holmes over the death of South American explorer and naturalist, John Anderson, found dead in his home apparently drained of blood by the giant Amazonian leeches he had been breeding. The secret of the first rubber trees smuggled out of Brazil is at stake. From Anderson's widow he learns that Anderson, in the period leading up to his death, had been having dizzy spells which he attributed to malaria. After examining Anderson's office and the conservatory, filled with 300 Amazonian plant and animal species, Holmes conducts his own experiments with leeches and meets with Brazilian royalists.

Story: Holmes and Watson visit Sir Simon Hardwick, a collector of antiquities, in Bloomsbury. A priceless letter written by Maitland, Mary, Queen of Scots' Secretary of State, has been stolen when Hardwick's agent, Ladrazzo, was assaulted while carrying it. After assessing the authenticity and content of other documents in Hardwick's possession, they visit Ladrazzo. A ransom note is delivered to Hardwick and Watson receives a shock before the unwanted truth is revealed.

Holmes and Watson are visited by Lady Arabella Middlethorpe who wishes to consult them over the disappearance of her friend, a young gypsy girl, Isobel, who had told her fortune, three times warning her of impending danger from which she was saved by a charm given to her by the girl. Now Isobel has vanished and the gypsies claim no knowledge of her. Holmes seems intent on examining the sites of Lady Arabella's misfortunes and the family home, and soon finds himself on the trail of missing emeralds as well as the missing girl.

Story: Holmes and Watson are summoned to Birmingham by Murchison, a wealthy manufacturer. He wishes them to expose as a fraud a medium who is taking money from his wife by claiming to be in contact with their dead son. They attend a séance given by the woman, where it is Watson's observations, and his later investigations, as much as Holmes's that help move the investigation forward.

Holmes, Watson and Mycroft are invited to Yorkshire to spend Christmas with Holmes's cousins, the Parsons. On the second night of their stay, Mrs Parsons' ruby necklace goes missing. While Watson is out shooting with Mrs Parsons' brother, Roderick, Holmes and Mycroft investigate the disappearance. Watson is both shot and kissed before the jewels are recovered.

Story: Holmes and Watson's plans for a post-breakfast stroll in Regents Park are interrupted by Marie Franklin who tells them of the advances made towards her by her next-door neighbour, a pawnbroker named Sharpe, and her suspicions about his wife's recent death. A mourning suit and a missing knobkerrie draw Holmes's interest, and a visit to a dressmaker moves him further down the trail to the truth, and a visit to Highgate Cemetery provides its confirmation.

Story: Holmes and Watson are summoned to Whitehall by Lord Hawkesbury, the Foreign Secretary. He tells them that the Russian anarchist Kropotkin has been engaged to assassinate a visiting dignitary, and charges them with the task of preventing the murder. Posing as supporters, they infiltrate the anarchist organisation, finding work in the offices of the Torch radical newspaper, and meeting Kropotkin at the Café Royal. After achieving little success, a casual remark from Watson puts Holmes on track to uncover the truth of the case.

Story: Holmes and Watson are called on by Peter Bowman, First Mate of the Matilda Briggs. He tells them how the ship has recently returned from Sumatra, with a Chinese man, Mr Lee, and his mysterious cargo aboard. On the voyage home the captain had been killed and seemingly partially eaten. As senior officer, Bowman had questioned the crew and Lee, but to no avail.
A second, similar, death took place after they docked in London. Holmes and Watson accompany him to the ship, where Lestrade has already made an arrest. Holmes's examination of the ship's hold reveals that a giant rat has been brought to England aboard the ship and is now loose in the East End. He sets out to track down its lair, and discover the motives behind its journey.
