Story: Victoria Dysart has been receiving pieces of jigsaw puzzle through her door on a weekly basis. The jigsaw appears to be a picture of her tombstone. She has the subsequent pieces delivered to Holmes week by week as they arrive, until, when Victoria's brother delivers a piece, it becomes clear that there is a man standing behind the gravestone, whose identity the two final pieces will reveal. Holmes deduces from the picture that the churchyard is in Norfolk and sets out to track it down, discovering something of Victoria's father's past when he does so, having been put on the right track by Watson's discoveries about a scythe in the photo. They sit vigil in Dulwich, waiting for the delivery of the next piece. A policeman's brother, an invading tramp, and a visit to Wormwood Scrubs round off the case.

Story: A spate of burglaries has been plaguing grand houses on the outskirts of London. Holmes is called in when an abandoned bicycle is found in the snow in front of the latest house to be robbed, footsteps lead to the bike, but not away from it.

Story: Holmes is once again professing boredom when he is visited by Sally Devereux, whose father has disappeared after a trip to London on which he told her to wear a pair of blue silk knickers he had brought from India. She has also come across her father's Indian companion going through her underwear drawer. Holmes refuses to take on the case, but Watson takes her home to Mary, and travels to her home to confront Singh. He finds the house empty, but reads the following day of Singh's murder. Holmes picks up the case when he sees the significance of the underwear. A visit to Mycroft further explains matters, but the murderer remains out of reach.

Story: Norton Haffenden consults Holmes when a dead tree prevents his brother claiming his share of their father's will. Holmes takes an expert from Kew Gardens to the family home to examine the tree. Believing that the criminal cannot be found, Haffenden pays Holmes and gives up on the case, but soon his sister-in-law re-employs Holmes to continue his investigations, while the family butler asks him to desist.

Story: A cabbie tells Holmes of a passenger wearing a yellow top hat who disappeared into his house to fetch his umbrella and never returned, leaving a suitcase in the cab. When the cabbie called at the house he was told that the man did not live there. The suitcase contains bricks and newspapers.

Some days later, Watson reads about an unhappy diner standing on his chair and haranguing the other diners at Simpson's, and the following day sees a man in a yellow top hat causing a scene feeding pigeons in Trafalgar Square. Further incidents occur over the next few weeks. Gossage visits them and tells them that his mother has been murdered by her servant girl, who has been tried and found not guilty.

Holmes believes the man is Phillimore and some time later sets Watson to follow him and insists that he must find a way to have the man arrested. The trail leads to the Lyceum Theatre where Watson enlists Stoker's help and the following day Holmes reveals the motive behind the bizarre events to Watson and Lestrade.

Story: Holmes is called to Astley Grange by Baynes to investigate the murder of Mills, a retired teacher, who has been shot in the back at his desk while his wife was away. Although the neighbours say they were an exceptionally loving couple, his wife does not seem overly upset at her husband's death. Holmes fixes on a desk that has been moved in the room where the murder took place and the fact that the window which was broken for the killer to shoot through was unlocked. An examination of the victim's walking stick finally enables Holmes to clear up the mystery.

It leads to the discovery that a holy relic, a piece of the cross, has been stolen. Holmes also encounters an old college friend in the village and forces the vicar to remove his shirt.
